Frequently Asked Questions

Do only minors need a Permit in the State of California?

Nope! Anyone of any age looking to get their license will need a learners permit to begin practicing driving. Even those with licenses from other countries, or adults over the age of 18 need to get a permit first.

Can I drive without getting a permit first?

Not legally! The first step for everyone is preparing to take the knowledge test for the permit. For minors, there is an added step of a Driver’s Education course, but no one is allowed to drive in the state of California without either a license or a permit first, even with a driving school!

How do I prepare for the knowledge test to get my permit?

The California DMV suggests studying the information in the California Driver’s Handbook found for free here: https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/handbook/california-driver-handbook/

However, the pass rate after studying the handbook is still only 50%! Additional practice is the best way to go!

Can I take the knowledge test for a permit online?

Yes! Most people can take the knowledge test online using their personal computer. The DMV will allow you to opt for the online version for the test if you have the right hardware for your computer. You will still need to make a trip into the DMV to pick up your permit and take the vision test, but the CA DMV is actively working on making this process smoother as well!

When do seniors need to take the knowledge based permit test?

All drivers renewing their license after the age of 70 years old will be required to complete a Knowledge and Vision Test. The DMV allows seniors to opt for a “no-fail” eLearning course via the DMV, or completing the knowledge test for a passing grade.
